Empowering Futures: Highlights and Updates from Aravanai and Yarl IT Hub
Dear Aravanai Community,
Greetings from Aravanai! Welcome to the latest edition of our newsletter. We're excited to share with you some remarkable achievements and updates from our on-the-ground partner, Yarl IT Hub (YIT), a not-for-profit social enterprise based in Jaffna, Sri Lanka. YIT continues to make significant strides in empowering underserved communities through technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship.
Looking Ahead to 2024
As we look ahead to 2024, we invite continued collaboration in shaping a future marked by empowerment, innovation, and community. This year, we are planning to invest significant efforts in the Eastern Provinces, which requires an additional CAD 30,000, bringing our total commitment to CAD 60,000. We have initiated talks with St. John's Community College based in Batticaloa, Sri Lanka, and are planning to establish a coding school on the premises of the Vocational Training Center (VTC) run by Darshan Ambalavanar, Director of St. John's Community College. Join Us at the Career 101 Event
We're organizing an event called Career 101 for high school students on June 9th at the East Shore Community Center from 5 PM to 8 PM. This event aims to provide mentorship and networking opportunities. Spotlight: Yarl IT Hub (YIT) Success Stories
Here are some of the highlights from YIT's incredible journey in 2023:
- YGC Innovation Festival: This grand event attracted over 20,000 attendees through collaboration with 50 organizations, offering experiential learning opportunities.
- Geographic Expansion to Vavuniya: Yarl IT Hub established a permanent presence in Vavuniya, significantly expanding its geographic reach.
- MoU with University of Jaffna: Partnered to boost entrepreneurship and innovation by establishing Start-Up Incubation centers and facilitating access to resources.
- Uki Coding School's Success: Achieved all graduates securing internships and introduced a successful 6-month Startup Essentials program, completing two cohorts in 2023.
- YIT Accelerator Growth: Supported over 10 start-ups on their growth journey with two accelerator cohorts.
Uki's Impact and Expansion
In 2023, Uki, YIT's scholarship-based accelerator program, excelled with initiatives such as producing an enlightening documentary about Uki, successfully completing digital marketing and startup essentials courses, and opening a new center in Vavuniya. Uki has trained over 550 students, leading to numerous internships and entrepreneurial ventures, showcasing its role in nurturing tech talent.
YGC Innovation Festival '23
The YGC Innovation Festival '23 transcended traditional boundaries, attracting entrepreneurs, professionals, enthusiasts, and students. Highlights included talks by industry experts, master classes, and interactive experiences like the Mini Expo and competitions, fostering creativity, collaboration, and practical skills development.

We are thrilled to announce that this year's YGC Innovation Festival, the biggest celebration of innovation, entrepreneurship, and technology, will take place on August 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th in Jaffna. If you are in Sri Lanka around that time, we would love for you to attend and be part of this incredible event. Mark your calendars and join us for four days of inspiration, learning, and networking!
Aravanai's on-the-ground highlights
Rajan Bala, Chair of Aravanai is currently on the ground in Sri Lanka and was able to contribute to the following:
- Master Class on Product Development: Conducted at the YGC Innovation Festival, attended by about 60 aspiring product managers and entrepreneurs.
- Uki Coding School Graduation: Invited as a special guest to hand out certificates alongside University of Jaffna lecturers.
- Guest Lecture on Cloud Technologies: Delivered a lecture on opportunities and challenges in Cloud Technologies to about 50 computer engineering students at the Ariviyal Nagar University of Jaffna.
- The Flag Forum Session: Conducted a session on problem identification and solution generation using the design sprint method, leading to a community cleanup initiative by students.
- Mentorship at Dream Space, Batticaloa: Dedicated time to mentoring the Mechatronics team, preparing them for the upcoming YGC Innovation Competition. Additionally, provided guidance to the Software Lab team in developing a social enterprise mobile app designed to enable communities to report incidents directly to the local municipality.
- Technical Advisory for Noolaham Foundation: Joined Noolaham Foundation's technical advisory group, assisting with cloud storage migration and infrastructure management.
- Director of Client Engagement at Xebiro Group: Joined Xebiro Group, bringing valuable experience from Amazon.com and co-founding Hiku to continue supporting our community in the North and East of Sri Lanka.
